What can we expect from Avengers: Infinity War?

Death. Defeat. Retreat. Exile. Resurgence. War. Triumph!
You are going to fight Thanos with the complete Infinity Gauntlet.
If you didn’t understand the peril the Avengers are in, read the above line again.
Infinity Gauntlet is the most powerful weapon in canon Marvel comics. In right hands, it has the potential to wipe out half of the universe with a snap of the fingers.
Okay, I agree that much will not be shown in MCU. Yet, the Gauntlet has the capability to kill the Earth with everyone on it infinite times.
Here is my story for Infinity War —
Thanos is in his quest to collect the Infinity Stones. Most probably to woo Death (Hela in MCU). However, she’s too powerful for him. So he must collect the stones to balance her. While collecting the stones, he comes to know that few of them are here, on Earth. He comes for them. However, Thor realizes the true power of the stones and assembles everyone to protect them.
They come together. Meanwhile, Loki gives Thanos the tesseract housing the Space stone, probably to save his own life.
Thanos kills every Nova corps and takes the orb housing the Power stone. Now he has two stones. But he’s yet not contended. He comes to take the others. The Avengers faces him, and while doing so, Captain America is killed. The Avengers are forced to retreat and remain in exile for sometime.
Then they meet hope. They meet Captain Marvel.
She provides a trustworthy leadership, the thing they were missing after the death of Steve. They hatch a plan, and slowly take out the Black Order.
Then they face Thanos. No they won’t fight him directly. Even with no Black Order and Captain Marvel, Thanos can still defeat them very easily. They will somehow seperate the gauntlet from Thanos, and will use it against him.
Thanos may be very powerful, but the stones dwarf him.
Finally the Avengers would win.
At long last…

Films you should watch to best understand and appreciate Avengers: Infinity War?

Before going to watch Avengers: Infinity War, I cannot stress upon how important it is to watch all of the existing “Phase 3” Marvel movies. Ideally, one should have even watched all of the “Phase 1” and “Phase 2” movies for a complete understanding. gamora guardians of the galaxy cosplay
Phase 1:
  • Iron Man (2008)
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010)
  • Thor (2011)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  • The Avengers (2012)
Phase 2:
  • Iron Man 3 (2013)
  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Ant-Man (2015)
Phase 3:
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Doctor Strange (2016)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  • Black Panther (2018)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Although this is the order in which they are released, the chronological order within the universe itself is something different so the timeline might seem a bit confusing. princess and the frog cosplay
I would suggest watching it in this order for the correct chronological timeline:
  1. Captain America: The First Avenger
  2. Iron Man
  3. Iron Man 2
  4. The Incredible Hulk
  5. Thor
  6. The Avengers
  7. Iron Man 3
  8. Thor: The Dark World
  9. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  10. Guardians of the Galaxy
  11. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
  12. Avengers: Age of Ultron thea queen halloween costume
  13. Ant-Man
  14. Captain America: Civil War
  15. Black Panther
  16. Doctor Strange
  17. Spider-Man: Homecoming
  18. Thor: Ragnarok
  19. Avengers: Infinity War

What could be the possible plot of Avengers: Infinity War?

The Avengers: Infinity Wars Parts 1 and 2 will have the Avengers battling an immortal named Thanos, who has the power of the Infinity Stones.
Thanos:
Thanos is a mutant member of the race of superhumans known as the Titanian Eternals.
Demonstrating enormous superhuman strength, stamina, and durability, Thanos can absorb and project vast quantities of cosmic energy and is capable of telekinesis, telepathy and matter manipulation. Thanos is an accomplished hand-to-hand combatant, having been trained in the art of war on Titan. green arrow and black canary costumes
Thanos is a genius in virtually all known fields of advanced science and has created technology far exceeding contemporary Earth science. He often employs a transportation chair capable of space flight, force field projection, teleportation, time travel and movement through alternate universes. alice madness returns misstitched dress
Thanos first appears in a cameo during the mid-credits of The Avengers (2012), Josh Brolin portrays the character in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
Thanos, as seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy
Infinity Stones:
The Infinity Stones (or Soul Gems as they were originally dubbed when introduced in Marvel Comics in the ’70s) are six over-powered and indestructible artifacts, the most powerful in the Marvel universe. Each of the six has a unique property but together, they can be used to alter, destroy or recreate the entire universe. Together, they grant someone the power of a god.
In the comics, these are the six gems, differentiated by their color and attribute, offering abilities ranging from time-travel and bending the physical laws of the universe, to teleporting across the galaxy and controlling the souls of the living or dead: korra season 4 costume
  • Mind
  • Power
  • Reality
  • Soul
  • Space
  • Time
As we have seen in the movies:
A brief description of each Stone, and its first appearance
Space Infinity Stone, the Tesseract
Reality Infinity Stone, the Aether
Power Infinity Stone, the Orb
The Mind Stone, originally in Loki's Sceptre, now embedded in the Vision's forehead
Once we have all six, Thanos will attempt to collect them all, and put them together in the Infinity Gauntlet, an item first introduced in Odin’s Vault in Thor.
The Infinity Gauntlet. Image from Comic-Con.
WHAT NEXT?
In the comics, when Thanos has the gauntlet and all six gems equipped, he eradicates half of the living things in the universe before the remaining heroes join forces.

However, we can never be sure as to which exact storyline the MCU movies will follow, so all this is speculation at this point.

What are your favorite lines in Avengers: Infinity War?

“There’s no other way” -Stephen Strange
Oh how quickly Strange changed his mind about protecting the Time Stone at all costs, even if it costs his comrade’s lives. Really makes you wonder huh, about that whole 1 in 14.000.605. This quote will definitely be over-analyzed by fans and critics alike. black canary costumes
“You should’ve gone for the head” -Thanos
Really tells you about the kind of being Thanos is. Stormbreaker is a weapon forged by the famed Eitri from a dying star’s force, the same force that built the Infinity Gauntlet which can withstand and channel the power of the 6 stones. Thanos managed to make a joke at that moment about being struck by such weapon. thea queen cosplay
“The Olympics, maybe even a Starbucks” -Okoye
Is Okoye making a jab at our lovely capitalist system? or am I trying to politicize this line and promote communism? you make the call.
“He’s not a dude. You’re a dude. This is a MAN.” -Drax the Destroyer
Drax is not the brightest person but he sure knows how to trigger Star-Lord.
“I should’ve washed it first. You see, the only way I could’ve smuggled it out of … was to put it in my … ”-Rocket Raccoon
Actually I didn’t remember or hear the quote clearly. Someone please correct me. My inner child chuckled the hardest at this line.
“We have blood to spare.” -Proxima Midnight
She was right.
Edit: I remembered Quora is full of Indians, so this one shall be included in a shameful attempt to garner more upvotes red arrow costumes

Will Marvel downplay Avengers: Infinity War like they downplayed Captain America: Civil War?

Marvel downplayed Civil War? Someone must’ve forgotten to tell me, because I recall every possible piece of merchandise being marketed as Team Cap or Team Iron Man. I think I still have a Team Cap vs. Team Iron Man tissue box somewhere… Literally every possible piece of merchandise was branded for Civil War. green arrow and black canary costumes
As for marketing, Civil War was giant. Leading up to release, nearly every media outlet was speculating what would happen, the trailers were poured over countless times, and Civil War has all the movie buzz of that season. The press tour was pretty extensive as well. I remember my friends and I freaking out about Spider-Man’s debut months before Civil War hit theaters. The hype was huge.
Infinity War is shaping up to be even bigger than Civil War, maybe bigger than Avengers, of 2012. The Infinity War trailer practically broke the internet in November, five-ish months before Infinity War’s release. If a trailer in Novembergot that much hype, think how big the actual movie, in May, is going to be. injustice 2 joker costumes
Marvel is bringing home the marketing for Infinity War. I don’t think we’ll see as many Infinity War logos slapped on various ordinary products, but merchandise will be huge. Action figures, t-shirts, posters, LEGO sets, and that’s just the basic stuff. You can already buy some of the toys and things. Even now, in February, actors and actressss are starting to give interviews discussing Infinity War, and I can only imagine what the full press tour will look like. Marvel is marketing this movie as the culmination of ten years of movies. The big one, the climax, the end of what movies we’ve seen thus far, the beginning of a completely different MCU. It’s packed with so many characters. The storyline is so epic. I mean, all the superheroes in the MCU teaming up, with the balance of the world (maybe the galaxy? maybe the universe?) hanging in balance? This movie is going to be great. alice madness returns misstitched dress
The stakes are high, but so is the anticipation.

What one thing or scene do you want to see in Avengers: Infinity War?

Scenario: Final Battle vs Thanos; Location: Earth
Almost all heroes are down. Steve Rogers was the last man standing and he just took a grunt of Thanos’ might — with an Infinity Gauntlet with ALL the Infinity Stones clearly glowing in his left hand. Steve’s vision was blurring, trying to pull him into the dark, but he held on. He could barely stand and fight, yes, but he held on. To hope. charlie and the chocolate factory anime
It seemed all was lost when suddenly, an arrow flies past Steve and straight towards Thanos.
ZOOM.
The arrow was clearly aimed at Thanos’ skull. alice madness returns misstitched dress
“Insects. Your struggle is futile,” Thanos declares, “Space Stone!”
The blue Infinity Stone glowed from the gauntlet, and suddenly, a small wormhole appeared in front of Thanos. The arrow flew harmlessly into the wormhole, and then disappeared.
“Well, so much for a surprise,” Hawkeye sighed, revealing himself from behind a stray boulder. “But maybe -” he added, “this will surprise you.” thea queen cosplay
CLICK!
Thanos heard something click at his Gauntlet, and looked down to check. A small circular device that blinked Red. Beep. Beep. Beeeeeep—
The device glowed steady red as it started to activate. The Gauntlet began to shrink! Before Thanos could even call forth the power of another Infinity Stone, the Gauntlet had already shrunk far enough that it squeezed tightly into his left hand, pressing every atom of his hand tighter and tighter until it could not bear the pressure of the shrinking Gauntlet. Another second later, the Gauntlet was at molecular size, and Thanos’ left hand had been crushed as it shrunk.
“Gauntlet retrieval success!” Ant-Man exclaimed as he reverted back to normal size, holding the Gauntlet in this hands. “But man, this thing’s heavy.”
“You fools! You’ll pay for this one day… for I, Thanos, shall return.” Thanos said as he gets aboard an abandoned fighter ship and escapes the battle.
And Hawkeye and Ant-man look on at the horizon; appreciating the skies and perhaps the most beautiful sunset they had seen in years.

My favorite lines in Avengers: Infinity War?

LOKI
“I assure you brother, the sun will shine on us again”
“For one thing: Im not asgardian. For another: We have a hulk”
“I, Loki. Prince of Asgard. Odinson. The rightful king of Jotunheim. God of mischief…”
TONY
“Did you seriously say ‘hitherto undreamt of’?”
“I’m sorry, Earth. Is closed. Today”
“Means get lost Squidward”
“Dude you’re embarrassing me in front of the wizards”
“We’re in a flying donut”
BANNER
“You lost another superbot?”
“Broke up? Like the Beatles?”
“There’s an ant man and a spiderman?”
DRAX
“He’s not a dude. You’re a dude. This. This is a man”
“Like a pirate had a baby with an angel”
QUILL
“I like to think of myself more as a titan-killing, long-term booty call. I’m gonna blow that nut sack of a chin right off your face”
“Which master do I serve? What am I supposed to say? Jesus?”
THOR
“They taught it (groot) on Asgard. It was an elective”
PARKER
“PLEASE DON’T PUT YOUR EGGS IN ME”
MANTIS
“Kick names. Take ass”
OKOYE
“Why was she up there all this time?”
VISION
“I’ll just feel you”
THANOS
“I hope they remember you” (to Tony)
I honestly think without the comedic relief, I would not have made it out of that movie. injustice 2 joker costumes
Bonus:
“WHERE is Gamora?” - Quill
“I’ll do you one better, WHO is Gamora?” - Tony
“I’ll do YOU one better, WHY is Gamora?” - Drax green arrow and black canary costumes

Is Avengers: Infinity War the end of the road for Marvel movies?

The beauty of it is that Marvel has built this universe in such a way that it won't be ultimately reliant on a constant cross-over "Avengers" movie for it to be a sustainable movie franchise. green arrow and black canary costumes I think this has been Kevin Feige's vision all along (pardon the pun). Yes, phases 1-3 seems to be all about solo movies that help build up to an Avengers ensemble movie every 3 years, but solo movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and its upcoming sequel Captain America: Civil War, and to a lesser extent the recent Ant-Man (film), has all shown that it doesn't have to be an "Avengers" movie to showcase multiple characters. injustice 2 joker costumes

Marvel is now playing the shared universe angle to its fullest potential, a right they very much earned at this point after multiple movie successes and a continuously growing audience.

In other words, Marvel is now in a position to do movie crossovers whenever the hell they want, regardless if its an ensemble or supposedly "solo" movie. This is no different from the set up in the comics. Certain major storylines spill over to individual books which may also feature guest characters or teams. At this point, it seems the only thing that can limit Marvel is the budget to pay all those actors to get them to appear, and the film rights to some of their major characters that are still with Fox. But even with that, they have managed to do a work-around for the lack of "mutants" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by introducing the Inhumans and the idea behind terrigenesis. Which is why they've chosen 2019 as just the right time to get a movie out about the Inhumans after all the dust settles from Infinity War. It is a subtle means to balloon their super-powered population on-screen.

And not just that. Let's not forget the bigger universe (pardon the pun again) that Guardians of the Galaxy (film) opened up, and for sure it's gonna be a lot more bigger after the Doctor Strange movie comes out, a guy who deals with multiple dimensions, parallel universes, alternate timelines, and all manner of grandfather paradox-inducing smorgasbord on a daily basis. It's gonna be wild.

Then we're gonna have characters like Black Panther and Captain Marvel introduced, which is clearly grounds for opening up more possibilities in terms of setting, themes and tone. (See Jonathan De Guzman's answer to Would there be any story left for Marvel Cinematic Universe after Thanos is defeated?) And of course, who can forget that deal of all deals that finally allowed Sony to let Spider-Man play in Marvel's playground. It brought everything much closer to how it was in the comics.

The Avengers team itself was not meant to have a fixed roster. I'm pretty sure the core members of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk (as portrayed by RDJ, Evans, Hemsworth and Ruffalo respectively) will not last past the Infinity War movies. We may not even see Evan's Cap after Civil War. Superhero teams are like professional sports teams as well - every incarnation gets its own set of star players or fantasy lineup.

And as Cliff Gilley said, Marvel's plan stretches all the way to 2028! By that time I'd be in my freakin' forties, about the same age as Kevin Feige now, and the guy's just getting started! That's how crazy - and visionary - this guy is.

As the years go by, even the departure of the corresponding actors from the role due to age concerns can even be used as an in-universe analogue to our heroes aging and retiring, and for a new, younger generation of actors to take on the roles of new characters, or replace the roles for established giants (as in the case of "passing on the mantle" for characters like Thor or Captain America). Again, just like how it worked in the comics, when recent events gave us a different dude wielding the shield, and a different woman throwing the hammer.

There's just so much story to tell. And when you've got that much story, the road could only get longer.

In a span of 6 years between 1977 - 1983, we got the original Star Wars trilogy. We didn't get another dose of story from that universe until 16 years later - now THAT'S a hiatus. And even then, the results were not even that great. And now 7 years from the last canonical installment (that's another hiatus right there), we are getting another trilogy between 2015-2019. Marvel is working harder than that. Marvel's legacy in film is gonna be more like James Bond. With 24 movies since 1962, some of the individual movies may not have aged well, but the character and concept have proven timeless again and again as as there had always been an audience for it. The longest break between James Bond movies was 6 years, from 1989's Licence to Kill to 1995's GoldenEye. That certainly wasn't the end of the road for Eon Productions. They've managed to sustain the franchise up to the present day, and even further into the future. And they've been doing it for just one character. What Marvel is doing is something bigger because of the LOAD of characters that they can either portray on-screen as continually evolving, die-off or written-off and replaced, or even re-introduced entirely, depending on how it serves the bigger-universe connectivity. charlie and the chocolate factory anime

prediction for Avengers 4, and how will it resolve Avengers: Infinity War

Major Spoilers Follow.
Seriously. I’m going to immediately begin by discussing the very end of the film. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see this film yet, please don’t view this answer.
fire emblem oboro cosplay

“Half of Humanity Will Still Exist”
Let’s begin by addressing what will probably pan out to be the most divisive and analysed moment in the film. The moment where Thanos clicks his fingers, and half of the Avengers dissipate away (although, it seemed a bit like more than half - the Russo brothers must have been particularly cruel when writing the film). The question is, is this permanent? The answer is almost certainly not, and Avengers 4 will likely follow the rewriting of this event. People who died include:
Spider Man, Doctor Strange, Drax, Star Lord, Gamora, Groot and Mantis.
Considering all of these characters are basically confirmed to have movies following them in the future, these deaths are almost certainly temporary.
The Gauntlet
It’s gone, dead, crushed, seemingly unable to be used again. That means that all the Infinity Stones won’t make a reappearance in the next film… unless they’re present in the past.
Time Travel
The question now turns to: how does the rewriting of Avengers 3 pan out? Well, we can only speculate, but we know it has something to do with Time Travel. That’s been confirmed by some very odd set photos showcasing Captain America in his Avengers-esque, star spangled uniform, and Loki (the person who died 10 minutes into Avengers 3) in the same mouth-cuffs as he was at the end of the Avengers. Present Avengers like Iron Man and Ant Man have been showcased in these events. The question remains how these Avengers go back in time (has SHIELD been working on something, and is the device shown in the post credit scenes something that can communicate to the past?). And speaking of, that leads to the next integral moment in Avengers 4.
Captain Marvel
The post credit scene to Avengers 3 showed Nick Fury pressing a button on a device to send a message after learning of the energy signals in Wakanda. This was probably sent to the past. The reasons for thinking this is a) if only a regular message needed to be sent, Fury would have used a phone and b) Captain Marvel is going to be set in the past. While Captain Marvel’s movie, which will come out before Avengers 4, seems to have the primary focus of the Kree/Skrull war, I would expect the end of the film to have Nick Fury’s message reach her, commencing her role in changing the future in Avengers 4.
This is more fanfic-esque than speculation, but I would LOVE it if in the post credits of Captain Marvel Danvers listens to the recording Fury sent her, which is almost identical to the speech Fury gave Stark when the Avengers Initiative was first namedropped in the MCU. The entire thing would be a recreation of Iron Man’s post credit scene, reminiscent of the past and indicating the important role Marvel will soon play in the Avengers. That scene would give me goosebumps.
Thanos
Of course, Avengers 4 needs an antagonist, and that’s Thanos. At the end of the film he got his wish of balance in the universe and sat down to enjoy a sunrise at last. He probably won’t get his peace for long, as the Avengers are going to try and tear down everything he worked for. Thanos is one of the most developed villains in the MCU and also one of the few survivors of their initial films, so it’s a safe bet he’ll have an important role in the MCU’s future.
Nebula
Nebula is conveniently one of the film’s few survivors. Nebula killed Thanos in the comics. Nothing more needs to be said.
Hawkeye
The Russo brothers claim they are playing ‘the long game’ with Hawkeye and his role in the Avengers. Hawkeye fans will probably want some payoff in Avengers 4 considering his non-existent role in this film - oh wait, Hawkeye fans don’t exist.
In all seriousness, Hawkeye will likely be a major part of the struggling remnants of the Avengers who partake in the journey of stopping Thanos in the next film.
The Soul Stone
Now we get to the things I suspect the average moviegoer or even MCU fan might not have picked up on in the film. One of the things the Russo brothers skilfully ignored was what the Soul Stone was actually capable of doing. We get a snapshot after Thanos clicks his fingers of him with young Gamora, who talks to him and asks him whether the Gauntlet was worth it. I can only speculate, but together with the hints that the Soul Stone is the most powerful and dangerous Infinity Stone, my guess as to what it does is allows its user to communicate with the dead, Ressurection Stone style. I’m still iffy on this one, but I’m sure it will be a heavy theme of Avengers 4. It could even allow the resurrection of the dead(?). This theory would justify the entire situation on Volomir (Volmir? Vomolir?), with the sacrifice of one enabling the ability to communicate with all the dead. black canary costumes
“There Was No Other Way”
This is my big theory. Dr Strange stated there was only one way to stop Thanos after viewing the future on Titan…. cut to a different scene. Did Dr Strange tell the team the method of stopping Thanos, and that was how they got him down on Titan (until Quill went beserk)? It initially appears that way… until Quill boasts about how their method of taking down Thanos was his plan. So what did Dr Strange even contribute to the battle plan? More importantly, did he use his strategy at all? Then Thanos gets Iron Man down and Dr Strange offers him the Time Stone for Stark’s life. Really? This contradicts what Strange explicitly stated earlier in the movie - that he would sacrifice any of their lives for the Stone. You could argue that’s character development. I argue it’s a hint that Dr Strange knows more than he lets on. Finally, as he dissipates, he justifies trading Stark for the Time Stone by cryptically stating, ‘There was no other way’.  injustice 2 joker costumes
Dr Strange must have seen that the only future where the Avengers triumphed over Thanos was one where Thanos beat them. He must have ensured that Thanos triumphed in exactly the way he had to. And he knew that when the time came in Avengers 4, the Avengers would resist Thanos and reverse his mass murders. The team on Titan succeeded in their goal, and because of their actions Thanos can be stopped.

What character left you feeling most disappointed in Avengers: Infinity War?

They got killed off too quickly. I was growing to like Black Dwarf too, since he seems like a no-nonsense kind of guy with no intelligible speech with a huge ass pickaxe? hammer? anchor since it has chains? and huge ass biceps. He put up a good fight against Banner, Black Panther and Iron Man. injustice 2 joker costumes
I left Civil War with a great deal of admiration for Rhodey. He seemed like the only character who supported the Accords because it was the right thing to do(both from a moral and a legal perspective) and not out of self-loathing (like Tony) or as a necessary evil (like Natasha and Vision). He paid the greatest price among the cast for standing up for his beliefs, and nevertheless said at the end of the film that he regretted nothing. For all those reasons, he stood out to me as the most heroic character in the movie.
Flash-forward to Infinity War, and in the first half-hour all of that is flushed down the drain. The government is evil and stupid, the Accords are to blame for everything wrong in the Universe, and Colonel James Rhodes regrets ever signing up to respect the chain of command and the rights of sovereign nations. green arrow and black canary costumes
Never mind that cooperating with the government could have put ten thousand guns and five hundred tanks in Wakanda waiting for the Outriders and won the battle with trifling ease. (Not to mention they probably wouldn’t have stupidly balked at sacrificing Vision and destroying the Mind Stone.) Instead, because Rhodey blew off 117 sovereign nations and joined the “we know better than literally everyone else” crew, the battle would have been lost if not for Thor.
I mean, I get that the writers are Team Cap, that’s been glaringly obvious ever since Civil War. But do they have to rub our face in it like that? It gets really bloody annoyingblack canary costumes

Do you feel sad with Avengers:Infinity War's End

Okay, so here’s a different perspective towards the movie that might help you enjoy the ending a lot more-
Assume there are no further sequels. thea queen cosplay

Now I know that is a very wrong assumption to make. I also know that this is, in all probability, not the correct way even the makers of this movie wanted us to think.
But this mode of thought works.
Imagine how the ending must have felt if you knew there was going to be no more Avengers 4, no more franchise extensions; this is the end of the line for Parker, most of the Guardians, Strange, and T’Challa.
Imagine how the ending of Avengers: Infinity War must have felt like if each entry in the MCU would simply come out, with no reveals on who has their franchises and who’s coming next.
It’s powerful and heartbreaking. red arrow costumes
Suddenly, Peter saying “Mr. Stark… I don’t feel so good… I don’t want to go, Mr. Stark.” (always Mr. Stark; even in his dying moments, not lacking at all in respect) while falling into Tony’s arms and disintegrating becomes one of the most gut-wrenching moments in all of cinematic history.
That’s how these stories have to be felt. As individual stories that each constitutes a point of no return. Right now, there is no way in sight to get them back. And this means all of them are dead.
Of course, that’s not what the filmmakers thought would happen when they filmed or wrote this, since they knew the sequels had been announced. But the way the deaths were presented, they definitely tried to make it look like it had stakes, even though there really weren’t any for most of the viewing audience. black canary costumes
That being said, there’s really nothing wrong with looking at the movies as if they were what they’re presented as. To think that those deaths truly are irreversible, and that this really is the first indication of the fact that Carol Danvers is coming. Essentially, the ending was only disappointing because you know those characters are coming back - and all that would not be the case had this movie possessed the ideal impact the makers wish it had.
Do yourself and the Russos a service and assume there’s no more movies.

Avengers: Infinity War has all the great moments you would expect, there are laughs, there are reunions, first-meetings, epic--and I do mean epic battles, loss, sorrow, joy, and dire consequences.

Avengers: Infinity War is the apex predator of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It's the most "Marvel" of all the MCU movies. And it’s wonderful.

Before I go on, I want to tell you that I’m not going to spoil this movie for you, but I’m going to talk about it frankly, and if you haven’t seen the movie, I’d encourage you to do so before you read this review.

If you like the MCU movies, you’ll like this, so go see it. This review will be here for you later.

Onward and Excelsior!

The set-up for *Avengers: Infinity War* started long ago with *Iron Man 2* (Iron Man 2 (2010) *in 2010. Since that movie, and through three phases of films, the team behind the MCU has built the characters, and the settings, and has introduced the Infinity Stones as a recurring element for nearly a decade.

Please take a moment and think about the level of planning and execution that it took to build up to this movie. Nothing of this complexity and scale has ever been attempted or delivered in the history of cinema.

The new slate of films (*Captain America: Civil War* (Captain America: Civil War (2016)), *Guardians of the Galaxy* (Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) **GotG Volume 2* (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)), *Doctor Strange* (Doctor Strange (2016)), *Black Panther* (Black Panther (2018)), *Spider-Man: Homecoming* (Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)), and *Thor: Ragnarok* (Thor: Ragnarok (2017))) were particularly designed to lead into *Infinity War*.

So, *Infinity War* begins with the refugees of Asgard that were in space when we last left them in *Thor: Ragnarok*. They have been found by Thanos, who is gathering the six Infinity Stones, and one member of the Asgard crew has an Infinity Stone in his possession.

What happens in this scene is a quick introduction to the might of Thanos and his gang of super-powered bad guys called The Black Order, and sets the tone for the rest of the film.

*Avengers: Infinity War* clocks in 2 hours and 29 minutes and it moves along briskly.

Thanos

One of the frequent complaints of fans and critics of the MCU is how villains tend to be one-dimensional with tenuous motivation and lack the power to truly challenge the heroes.

If that’s been a concern, then you’ll enjoy Thanos (played by Josh Brolin), who is not only multi-faceted, and amazingly powerful, but such an integral and omnipresent part of this film you could make a case that he’s the main character.

Thanos is a complicated guy. He fully believes that his plan of universal genocide is an act of kindness and that he must not stop until he succeeds in his plan.

We see him show restraint. We see him cry. We see him show compassion, and respect, and pity. Thanos is not a one-note villain. He’s believable, and passionate, and that’s what also makes him incredibly scary.

The Writers and Directors

Let’s give some credit to writers Christopher Markus (Christopher Markus) and Stephen McFeely (Stephen McFeely), who have been frequent contributors to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for making Thanos such a compelling antagonist, and for tackling the herculean task of bringing ten years of characters and settings together so successfully.

While I suspect that the writers had help from the entire talent pool of Marvel Studios (a lot of those Guardians jokes sound like James Gunn (James Gunn) to me) you have to be impressed with how seamless the juggling act is here.

They do a great job of creating unique pairings with the heroes we’ve come to know from different ends of the galaxy. Seeing Rocket try to cheer up Thor, or Black Widow fight alongside Okoye (oh wow, I loved that), are the types of mash-ups that will thrill fans.

Speaking of jokes, in Marvel fashion, and despite the ominous mood, there is a lot of effective humor in *Avengers: Infinity War*. The jokes don’t feel forced and contribute to the full-range of emotions that are present here.

The script for *Avengers: Infinity War* follows the beats of the Marvel films that preceded it. This is not *Pulp Fiction* or *Fight Club* or *Memento*. There are plenty of surprises in this film (more on that later) but this is first and foremost a by-the-books blockbuster thrill ride. For what it is, *Infinity War* is a well-oiled machine that is designed to entertain and it fully succeeds on that level.

Anthony Russo (Anthony Russo) and Joe Russo (Joe Russo) share the director chores, and they have established themselves as the team to beat behind the camera at Marvel Studios.

One of the things that always bothers me in superhero films is when things start to get fantastic then they often break down-either the effects suffer, or the physics feel wrong, or it just simply doesn’t play on screen (I’m looking at you Bryan Singer (Bryan Singer)).

But the Russos really know how to deliver a punch. Gravity, momentum, grit, grime, and effort are all part of the action scenes, and that makes for satisfying fights.

They also know how to bring out the performances from their actors. I’d like to emphasize again that this is film with a full range of emotion, and none of that would work if the actors were not coached properly or given what they need to bring that out. The Russos deserve some accolades for that as well.

Behind the Camera

Another thing that would have ruined this film is if the effects were not up to par.

Thanos is completely convincing. If a hulk-sized purple dude was real, I’d expect him to look exactly like Thanos in real life. I never felt removed from his scenes or distracted by his looks. They also convincingly portrayed his considerable range of emotions, again, without drawing me out of the experience. Please compare that to other recent films with lackluster effects if you want to see the difference.

With that said, there were a couple of bad guys that were not perfect, although still better than most films.

I don’t even know if you can count the space scenes as cinematography, since they were unquestionably created on a computer screen, but I can’t think of a film that has more visually-stunning space vistas, or more darkly-beautiful alien worlds.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe usually has some elements of science fiction, but *Infinity War* leans heavily into that genre, so much so that it felt like Star Wars at times. The spacecraft and gadgets were unique and memorable. Charles Wood (Charles Wood) as Production Designer should take a bow. I can’t wait to pick up the art book on this one.

Actors

Back to Thanos… Josh Brolin (Josh Brolin) was much better than I expected in this role. I’m not sure what I expected really, but he gave such a nuanced performance, as a CGI-character, that I think Andy Serkis (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0785...) might have a challenger for what should be a new category in acting awards.

If you don’t buy Thanos as a living breathing character then nothing would have worked in this film. Brolin and the effects team deserve high-fives for their accomplishment.

Another stand-out in a film that’s packed with good actors is Benedict Cumberbatch (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1212...) who effortlessly slipped into the established Avengers stable (as Doctor Strange) and managed to hold his own with some of the most charismatic leads in the business. I was also excited to see post-origin Doctor Strange with all his freaky powers and wily tricks.

One more? I think Elizabeth Olsen (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0647...) stepped up in a pivotal role.

Everyone is in true form this time. They all know how to bring these characters to life.

The Marvel Swerve

Marvel Studios did some very fancy publicity footwork, and used a lot of fan expectations against us to give us more than a few surprises this time.

Those trailers contain elements and scenes that don’t appear in the movie.

Surprise!

The behind-the-scenes contract negotiations, and couch-quarterbacking by superfans (like me) were turned on their head this time.

Marvel worked us, and I couldn’t be more pleased. A lot of things we were told were certainly going to happen in this movie didn’t. And plenty of things happened that no one predicted.

Go look at articles that discussed who will die in *Infinity War*, go see the film, and tell me how they did.

The End

I’m so reluctant to talk about this at all, but this is a review and I feel that I need to address it peripherally. **Again, if you haven’t seen the film go see it first!**

Some people who see the film will be confused by the ending, others mad, and still others will be jubilant.

I’m in that last category.

*Avengers: Infinity War* ends unlike any other MCU film. It’s bold and dynamic. It’s also a monumental cliffhanger, and a downer.

Before you burn your Spider-Man Underoos in disgust, remember, this is a film based on comics. Take a deep breath.

I think the ending is fulfilling and exciting, but only if you understand and see these films for what they are… an adaption of comic stories, or an ongoing serialized storyline.

The fact that the MCU has never faced such adversity before is awesome. It also ups the stakes for the next Avengers film, which is exactly what it’s supposed to do.

MCU Newbies

Are you a casual fan of the Marvel Studios films? Is it possible that you haven’t seen a MCU film? *Avengers: Infinity War* is most-definitely not a film for the uninitiated.

I get questions all the time asking if you need to see one film or another before seeing the latest MCU film. The answer this time is a resounding yes. I’m not saying that you have to see 19 films before you see this, but if you haven’t seen a least a few of recent films none of this is going to make sense.

It’s still a great spectacle film, but I can’t imagine that the general public will get much out of it besides some jokes and enjoyment from the action scenes.
away:

And the Rest…

For those of us who are fans of this universe, who have enjoyed the slow burn on this storyline, and have been waiting for this moment to crystallize, this is fan-service at the highest level.

I can’t count all the genuine moments of chills that ran through me, the moments of joy, of sadness, the laughter, the thrills, and the excitement that this movie gave to me.

*Avengers: Infinity War* is a gift to all of us who followed this wild journey for the past ten years. Honestly, it’s going to be hard to top this film, but I can’t wait to see them try.
